How to use gif to sprite sheet

CHOOSE → PROCESS → DOWNLOAD

01

Choose your animation

Start your GIF to sprite sheet conversion with one local GIF. The decoder reconstructs complete frames rather than treating partial updates as separate pictures. Files stay in this tab, and no account, project, or AI generation credits are required. Choose a shorter clip if the decoded frame budget is exceeded.

02

Arrange the recovered frames

Check the original order, then adjust columns, outer margin, spacing, and alignment. Your GIF to sprite sheet layout updates in the preview. Keep the source dimensions or enable transparent-edge cropping deliberately; zoom only changes the view and never increases the exported resolution.

03

Preview and export

Play the animation using its original frame delays or choose a uniform FPS. Download your GIF to sprite sheet result as PNG, or include JSON Hash, JSON Array, CSS, XML, and an animated GIF in a ZIP. Import coordinates or configure a regular grid in your game engine.

02 / SHEET FEATURES

Gif To Sprite Sheet features

Convert GIF to sprite sheet assets without sending your artwork anywhere. Reconstruct full animation frames, adjust a regular grid, inspect the timing, and download a PNG with coordinates for your game. This free converter runs entirely in your browser.

01

Complete frames, including transparent patches

A GIF often stores only the rectangle that changed since the previous moment. This GIF to sprite sheet converter composes those patches with their disposal instructions before packing them. That keeps moving characters complete and prevents old pixels from becoming accidental trails between frames.

02

A grid you can adjust immediately

Choose a compact grid, horizontal strip, or vertical strip. The GIF to sprite sheet workspace keeps individual source dimensions and aligns smaller frames inside equal cells. Outer margin and frame spacing remain separate settings, so the output can match the texture layout expected by your importer.

03

Timing that follows the source

Variable frame delays remain available after GIF to sprite sheet conversion. Switch to animation view, pause, or step through the action to check its rhythm. Use uniform FPS only when you intend to change playback speed; a PNG alone cannot tell an engine how long each frame should last.

03 / GAME USES

Made for your game workflow

Character loops for a game prototype

Use GIF to sprite sheet conversion to bring an existing walk, idle, or attack animation into a small game. Inspect the contact point under the feet and leave space around weapons or accessories. Packing cannot repair a character that changes size or position inside the original animation.

Effects and animated interface elements

Convert your own spell effects, reward animations, or animated item indicators into reusable frame grids. Preview the first and final frames together before using a looping effect. The converter reorganizes existing artwork; it does not generate missing poses or create new motion from a still image.

04 / EXPORT GUIDE

Settings, formats, and practical limits

Input and memory limits

The GIF to sprite sheet tool accepts one GIF up to 50 MiB, with at most 256 frames and 32 million decoded frame pixels. Source images and output sheets also follow the existing dimension limits. A small compressed GIF can still need considerable memory after every frame is decoded.

Alpha and background color

Original transparency is preserved in the PNG. Empty space between cells stays transparent unless you choose a solid export background. Opaque pixels already present in the GIF remain opaque. Use the separate GIF Background Remover first when you need to cut a character out of its background.

Coordinates for your importer

Export JSON Hash or JSON Array when your engine accepts atlas coordinates, or match the rows, columns, gaps, and margins manually. Keep the PNG and metadata from the same export together. Repacking changes coordinates, so older JSON should not be paired with a newer sheet.

06 / QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Gif To Sprite Sheet FAQ

Answers to check before processing and downloading your assets.

Is GIF to sprite sheet conversion free?

Yes. Decoding, layout, preview, and export are free without registration. Your GIF stays in your browser. The optional AI asset generator is a separate product and is not required to download a completed sheet.

Will the result keep the original animation speed?

Keep Use frame timing enabled to retain per-frame delays. Disable it to apply one FPS to the entire sequence. JSON can store durations, while PNG contains only pixels; your engine still needs the appropriate timing settings.

Can I remove a GIF background here?

This page preserves source pixels and packs them. To remove a background, open GIF Background Remover, process the frames locally, and download a transparent sheet or PNG sequence. The two tools serve different steps in the same asset workflow.

Why are there empty cells at the end?

A regular rectangular grid may have more cells than the frame count. Extra cells remain transparent. Reduce the column count or choose a strip to change the arrangement, and use the metadata to identify actual frames rather than treating padding as animation.

Can I recover the work after refreshing?

The workspace is held in the current tab and is cleared when the page refreshes. Download the sheet and any metadata before leaving. Model files used by the separate background tools may be cached, but your GIF and editing session are not saved.
