How to make a sprite sheet in three steps

A SHORT PATH FROM ART TO ASSET

01

Add your images or GIF

Drop PNG, JPG, or static WebP frames into Images mode, or switch to GIF to extract an animation. Image filenames sort naturally, so run-2 comes before run-10. If you still need artwork, generate assets on the home page, then come back here to arrange the frames.

02

Arrange and check every frame

Choose a grid, horizontal strip, or vertical strip. Set columns, outer margin, and frame gaps, then pick an alignment for different-sized images. Use the animation preview to find missing or misplaced frames. Drag the frame handles to fix their order before you export.

03

Download a useful asset

Download a transparent sprite sheet as PNG, add JSON, CSS, XML, or an animated GIF to a ZIP, or open the result directly in Sprite Sheet Cutter. That handoff carries the grid settings, names, and timing within this browser tab.

02 / SHEET FEATURES

A sprite sheet generator built around your frame sequence

Turn individual images or an animated GIF into a clean, organized sprite sheet. This free online sprite sheet maker aligns your frames, lets you check the animation, and exports PNG with optional JSON metadata — no account needed.

01

GIF to sprite sheet, with complete frames

A GIF can store only the pixels that change between frames. The GIF to sprite sheet workflow reconstructs the full image for each moment, including transparent areas and frame disposal. Original frame timing stays available for animation preview and JSON export; you can override it with a consistent FPS when needed.

02

Combine images without stretching them

When you combine images into a sprite sheet, the largest source width and height define the grid cell. Smaller images keep their original dimensions. Bottom-center alignment helps characters share a ground line, while center and top-left alignment suit effects or interface assets. Transparent source margins stay intact unless you turn on Crop transparent edges.

03

Preview the animation before exporting

Switch between the full sheet and sprite sheet animation preview to inspect both layout and motion. Pause on a frame, step forward or backward, and compare timing. Pixelated display keeps small sprites crisp; preview zoom changes what you see, not the resolution of the exported PNG.

03 / GAME USES

From PNG to sprite sheet for real game workflows

Character movement and action loops

Group a short walk, jump, or attack sequence into a regular grid for your game prototype. Put the frames in playback order and check the contact point at the bottom of each cell. If a character still appears to jump vertically, inspect the transparent margins in the source frames; alignment cannot infer the location of the feet.

Effects, icons, and imported animation

Use horizontal strips for small effects, or a compact grid for icons and animation frames. GIF input is useful when the animation already exists as one file. This sprite sheet creator packages existing artwork; it does not invent in-between frames or turn a still image into a new animated character.

04 / EXPORT GUIDE

Sprite sheet settings and export details

Columns, margins, and frame spacing

Columns control how many cells appear across a grid. Outer margin adds empty space around the sheet, while frame gap separates neighboring cells. These are different settings: importing the wrong gap into an engine can make the next sprite bleed into a frame. The displayed output dimensions update as you adjust the layout.

Transparent PNG and JSON coordinates

The default export background is transparent; a selected solid color is baked into the PNG. JSON uses a TexturePacker-style hash with unique filenames, source dimensions, frame rectangles, and duration. You can also export JSON Array, CSS, XML, or an animated GIF in the same ZIP. PNG grid slicing and JSON atlas import are different workflows; see the engine notes in the export panel.

Practical browser limits

Files are processed locally with no upload endpoint. The input limit is 50 MiB and 256 frames, with a 32-million-pixel decoded frame budget. Each source image or output sheet is limited to 8192 pixels per edge and 16 million pixels. Reduce dimensions or split a long animation if a limit is reached. Refreshing the page clears the workspace.

06 / MAKER FAQ

Sprite Sheet Maker FAQ

Practical details about exporting sheets, GIF timing, and what this free tool does not do.

Is this online sprite sheet maker really free?

Yes. Combining images, extracting GIF frames, previewing, and downloading the result are free and do not require registration. AI asset generation is a separate product flow; it is not a step you must complete to get your exported sheet.

Can I create a transparent sprite sheet from JPG?

The unused space between JPG frames can be transparent, but a JPG has no alpha channel. Existing background pixels stay in the image. Use PNG or static WebP with transparency when you need a transparent character silhouette.

Will a GIF keep its original animation speed?

Yes, with Use frame timing enabled. Disable that option to apply one FPS value to every frame. A PNG cannot carry playback timing by itself; use the duration values in the JSON or configure timing in your engine.

Can I cut the result and rearrange it again?

Yes. Open in Cutter carries your sheet into the companion tool without a download and upload round trip. The handoff lasts within the current tab and does not survive a page refresh.

Does this replace an advanced texture packer?

This tool focuses on regular grids and strips. It can crop transparent margins when you enable that option. It does not rotate sprites, create polygon packing, or generate multiple atlas pages. Those specialized packing tasks require a different workflow.
